Advantages of Renting
If you are going to need a hospital bed, wheelchair or other durable medical equipment which has been prescribed by your doctor, you may already know that Medicare medical insurance (Part B) can help pay for it. What you may not know are the rules for renting or buying such equipment.
If an item costs $150 or less, you are probably better off buying it. The reason for this is Medicare will not pay more in rental charges than would be paid if the equipment had been purchased.
For equipment costing more than $150, the rules are different. Equipment is classified into one of six categories. Hospital beds and wheelchairs are considered to be capped rental items. These items are rented for a maximum of 15 months. At the end of 10 months of rental, you are given the option of continuing to rent or to purchase.
The advantages of continuing to rent are:
1. American Home Medical is responsible for repairs, maintenance and
replacement. American Home Medical maintains all rental equipment.
2. American Home Medical will provide you with the equipment until there is no
longer a medical need for your equipment.
3. After the maximum Medicare payment amount is reached in the 15th month, you
will not need to make your monthly 20% coinsurance payment. Two times per
year, you will be billed 20% of the monthly rental amount for ongoing service and
maintenance.
The disadvantages of purchasing are:
1. You will be responsible for the cost of any equipment repairs or maintenance.
2. After you have recovered, what will you do with the medical equipment you have
purchased? You will be responsible for storage or disposal of this equipment.
3. Your medical condition may change, resulting in the need for different types of
home medical equipment to assist you in your home. American Home Medical
has the rental medical equipment to meet your home health care needs. There
are many necessary products that Medicare does not pay for, such as items for
bathroom safety and aids for daily living.
